MISSION, VISION, AND VALUES
Rooted in Politics is dedicated to making politics personal and relevant by unpacking the systems and decisions that shape our lives. We aim to build a community that thinks critically about social and political issues and takes informed civic action.
We envision a society where everyone is equipped with true political literacy to better understand the world and shape our future. We’re guided every day by our commitment to accessibility, authenticity, boldness, community, creativity, and integrity.
ABOUT CHRIS
I’m Chris Fluellen, creator and host of Rooted in Politics. I’m passionate about advocacy through communication, keeping my community informed, and challenging the status quo. I created Rooted in Politics to explore the political and social issues shaping our world and to remind everyone that every voice has power.
When I’m not behind the mic, I serve as co-executive producer for WHOV-TV, Hampton University’s newscast. I’ve also gained experience as a social media intern with the Detroit Writing Room and as a consumer communications intern with Molson Coors Beverage Company, where I developed skills in storytelling and brand strategy across digital and marketing platforms.
My work has been recognized through my selection as a 2026 White House Correspondents’ Scholarship recipient, my induction into the Kappa Tau Alpha Honor Society, and my participation in the 2025 NABJ Student Multimedia Project Cohort as a producer. I also earned first place in education reporting for my 2022 article, “Dear America, Fund Your HBCUs,” and placed second in Ally x TMCF’s Moguls in the Making pitch competition.
I’m also deeply committed to advocacy and civic engagement. I’m currently a Student Survivor Fellow with Everytown for Gun Safety, and my past experience includes serving as a Democracy Fellow with the Campus Vote Project and interning with Students for Voting Justice.
I’m a proud Detroit native who loves music, rollercoasters, nature, and trying new things, and astrology (I’m a Gemini, thanks for asking!).
